Platform Scale Buying Guide: Capacity, Size and Indicator

How to choose a platform scale for a factory, godown or shop: capacity, platform size, material, indicator features and installation tips.

A platform scale is the workhorse of factories, godowns and loading bays. Getting five details right avoids most problems.

1. Capacity

Choose a capacity about 20 to 30 percent above your heaviest load. Contec platform scales cover roughly 5 g up to 1 ton across models, see the platform scale range.

2. Readability (division)

A platform for sacks does not need 1 g readability. Pick the step that matches your tolerance, for example 5 g or 10 g on a 100 kg scale, 20 g on 200 kg. See capacity vs readability.

3. Platform size

The platform should fit the biggest item or container without overhang. Overhanging loads shift the weight and can cause errors.

4. Build and finish

  • Mild steel with paint for dry areas
  • Stainless steel for food, chemicals and wet areas
  • Ramps, if you roll loads onto the platform

5. Indicator

Look for a clear display, tare, hold and, if needed, a printer or computer connection. A rechargeable battery helps where power is unreliable.

Installing

Use a flat, hard floor. Keep the scale level and clear of vibration. Do not leave heavy items parked on it, and keep the area under the load cells clean.
