Legal Metrology and Trade-Use Weighing Scales in India

A plain guide to when a weighing scale must be verified and stamped under Legal Metrology rules in India, and what that means when you buy.

In India, weighing instruments used to sell goods by weight are regulated under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and its rules. The aim is simple: the customer and the seller should both be able to trust the number on the display.

This is a general guide, not legal advice. Rules, fees and renewal periods change, so confirm the current requirements with your state Legal Metrology office.

When it applies

  • Shops, jewellers, vegetable and grain sellers who bill by weight
  • Weighbridges and platform scales used to buy or sell bulk goods
  • Any weighing used to decide a price or a payment

When it usually does not

Scales used only inside a lab or a factory for internal checks, not for sale, are generally outside trade rules. Your quality system may still demand calibration, see how to calibrate a lab balance.

What it means in practice

  • Use a scale suited to trade use, not a hobby or kitchen model.
  • Get it verified and stamped by the authority, and renew on time.
  • Keep your certificate where inspectors can see it.
  • Re-verify after repairs or when the scale is moved to another premises, as the rules require.
