Why a Weighing Scale Drifts or Gives Wrong Readings (and Fixes)
The most common reasons a scale shows unstable or wrong weights, with a simple checklist to fix drift, zero shift and inconsistent readings.
If a scale changes its reading with nothing on it, or gives different weights for the same item, work through this checklist before calling for service.
1. Is it level?
Check the bubble level and adjust the feet. A tilted balance reads wrong.
2. Is it warmed up?
Electronics need time to stabilise. Fine balances may need 30 to 60 minutes after switching on.
3. Draft, vibration, heat
- Fans, AC vents and open windows move the pan
- Machinery or foot traffic on the same table causes noise
- Direct sunlight or a nearby heater changes the temperature
Fix by moving the balance, see where to place a balance.
4. Static and dirt
Dry air creates static on plastic and powders, which pulls on the pan. Wipe with an anti-static cloth. Check that nothing touches the pan, and that no debris is trapped underneath.
5. Overload or damage
A scale that was overloaded or dropped may not return to zero. If it never settles after cleaning, the load cell may need service.
6. Power and calibration
Low batteries and unstable power cause strange readings. Last, run a calibration with a certified weight: how to calibrate.
