Daily Care and Cleaning of a Weighing Balance
Simple habits that keep a balance accurate for years: cleaning, handling, zeroing, covers and what to avoid.
A balance is a precision tool. Most failures come from small daily habits, not from sudden faults. These steps cost nothing and add years to its life.
Every day
- Check the bubble level and the zero before you start.
- Place the sample gently, do not drop it on the pan.
- Use a container or weighing paper, never pour chemicals directly onto the pan.
- Wipe up spills at once with a soft, slightly damp cloth.
- Switch the balance off or cover it at the end of the day, if the manual says so.
Weekly
- Remove the pan and clean underneath with a soft brush.
- Clean the draft shield glass with a mild glass cleaner on a cloth, not sprayed on the balance.
- Check cables and plugs for damage.
Avoid
- Overloading or pressing on the pan
- Moving the balance while it is on, or carrying it by the pan
- Solvents and harsh chemicals on the housing
- Dust, moisture and corrosive fumes
Keep the unit steady and level, as described in where to place a balance. If the readings wander, see why a scale drifts. Calibrate on schedule: calibration guide. Need a service or accessory? Contact us.
