Semi-Micro Balances: When 0.01 mg Readability Matters

What a semi-micro balance is, which labs genuinely need 0.01 mg readability, and what room conditions it demands.

A semi-micro balance reads to 0.01 mg (10 micrograms), ten times finer than a standard analytical balance. It is the step between analytical (0.1 mg) and micro (0.001 mg) balances.

Who needs one

  • Labs weighing very small samples, such as a few milligrams of active ingredient
  • Filter and membrane weighing, for example dust or particulate collection
  • Research labs preparing low-concentration standards
  • Quality labs where the sample is small and the tolerance is tight

Who does not

If your samples are 100 mg or more, an analytical balance already gives enough relative accuracy. Semi-micro adds cost and demands better conditions, so buy it only when the sample size forces you to.

Conditions it demands

  • A heavy, rigid bench or weighing table, away from doors and fans
  • Stable temperature, no direct sunlight or AC draft on the balance
  • A level surface, checked with the bubble level
  • Regular calibration with certified weights, see how to calibrate a lab balance
