Crane Scale Buying Guide: Capacity, Display and Safety

How to choose a hanging crane scale: capacity, working load, display type, wireless options and important safety rules for lifting.

A crane scale hangs between the hook and the load and shows the weight while you lift. It is used in steel, engineering, ports, scrap yards and construction.

Choose the capacity

Your heaviest load should sit comfortably inside the capacity. Contec crane scales cover about 100 g up to 50 ton across models, so you can match the job, see all crane scales. Do not guess: a 3 ton lift on a 3 ton scale leaves no margin.

Display

  • On-scale display: simple and rugged, the operator reads it at the hook.
  • Wireless indicator: the operator reads the weight from a distance, see wireless vs standard.

Environment

For furnaces and hot metal, a heat-insulating shield protects the electronics, see heat-shielded crane scales.

Safety rules that matter

  • A crane scale is a weighing instrument, not lifting gear. Use rated slings, shackles and hooks, and follow your site's lifting rules.
  • Never exceed the rated capacity of the scale or the lifting equipment.
  • Never stand under a suspended load.
  • Inspect the scale and its hooks before use, and do not use a damaged one.
